M. Duane Nellis, Ph.D.
M. Duane Nellis is currently Dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West
Virginia University (WVU) and Professor of Geography. The Eberly College is WVU's
largest and most diverse College or School. Nellis is recognized internationally
for his research using satellite data and geographic information systems to analyze
various dimensions of rural land and water use. His research has been funded by
over 50 grants from sources that include NASA, National Geographic Society, the U.S.
Agency for International Development, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He
has published more than 100 articles, 11 books or book chapters, and has been
invited to speak at more than 60 universities worldwide. He has received numerous
awards such as National Honors from the Association of American Geographers and the
RSSG's Oustanding Contributions Award. He is also past President of the Association
of American Geographers (2002-2003), of the National Council for Geographic
Education (1994), and of Gamma Theta Upsilon (the International Geographic Honor
Society, 1999-2000). In addition, he currently serves as co-editor of the journal
Geocarto International.
